FROM POSADA EL CUADRANTE

Somo to Ajo by bike

You can cycle east from Somo along the unspoilt coastline.A shorter circuit takes us to the beach at Galizano and then returns along the coast we take very minor roads yet with a good tarmac and  past some sandy fine beaches .If you want, you can continue by another longer circuit takes us out to the village of Ajo ( Ajo is famous in Cantabria for its paellas), to get to Ajo we take a series of minor roads to avoid the main road. Before reaching Ajo we pass the picturesque little Romanesque 12th  century church of Santa Maria de Bareyo. This is the one of the treasures of Romanesque architecture in the area. The tower is modern, the original was struck by lightning; the rest of the structure is original. The coloured font is from the 12th century and is sculpted both on the outside and the inside. Originally a lot of the Romanesque stonework would have been coloured like this.
